"Graeme aka. the boss, has been renovating his home bit by bit for the past few years and we have loved following his journey. His firepit area is one of our favourites. It looks like the perfect spot to snuggle up and watch the stars in Summer and Winter. We are all just waiting for our invite now."
- Faith, Administration at Westside Timbers.
Below you will find some pictures of his fire pit area constructed of Laminated Merbau beams and posts, you will notice that the timber has leached out onto the concrete. Leaching occurs when timber releases it's natural oils and resins when exposed to moisture. This can cause brown, black or rusty looking 'bleed' marks on nearby surfaces. Timber species such as Merbau/Kwila, are more prone to tannin staining but with some effort and Hydrochloric Acid you can remove a majority of the stains from surfaces such as concrete or brick.
However, timbers that have been thermally modified, remove almost all of the tannin which means leaching is highly unlikely. Preventative measures can also be taken by providing the timber with some form of protection from the weather or sealing the timber surface. Below is some pictures of the same fire pit area but the tannin stains have been cleaned and the Merbau has been coated with Cutek CD50 Extreme, colour New bronzetone.
